What to expect in your test?

Your maths teacher often sets the test from the easiest question to the hardest. Where there are short-answer questions, you’ll see the easier ones at the top and the harder ones at the bottom. Here are some quick tips:

  • The one-mark questions need no working out. Always write the answers clearly and include the units where necessary.
  • Most questions will need working out whereas others will ask you to give reasoning. Take time to do the higher-order questions if they carry 3 - 5 marks.
  • The Year 8 maths tests marks can range from 30 – 50. You should be able to complete them in one period, 40 or 50 minutes. Some end-of-the-year tests do often have more than 50 marks and can take up to two periods in duration time.

Read the instruction carefully

Your teacher will expect you to do certain things. These expectations are often given in the instructions. So, it is important to read the instructions and know what you must do to get full marks.

Here is an example of instructions you are likely to see on your Year 8 maths test papers:

  • You may use a calculator.
  • Read all questions carefully.
  • You will need a ruler.
  • You have 50 minutes to complete this test.
  • Show all you working in the space provided.

Year 8 maths test best practices

Do not spend too much time on one question if you find it very hard to do. Move on and attempt the other test questions. Return to the hard question/s when you have time in the end.

For example, if you have 50 minutes to do 40 test questions, that is 1.25 minutes per question. Some questions may take less time, but all in all, you should NOT spend 2 minutes or more on one question. By doing this, you’ll have time to answer all the questions.

www.australiaawards.org.pg application form 2024

Before you apply for Australia Awards 2024

  • Check the opening and closing dates for your country, and select your country of citizenship/residency from the list of participating countries for specific information on eligibility, priority areas and how to apply. See the participating countries page for opening and closing dates.
  • If you intend to apply, you must read the Australia Awards Scholarships Policy Handbook. The handbook provides information including general eligibility requirements, selection processes, entitlements and responsibilities. Note that the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade may revise and update the handbook at any time without notice.
  • Some countries encourage and allow you to apply online while others require hard-copy applications. See your participating country profile for more information.

Applying online  - www.australiaawards.org.pg application 2024

Go to the Online Australia Scholarships Information System (OASIS). When you register online, you will be required to answer some questions to establish your eligibility. You will then be given a unique registration number, username and password.

You do not need to submit your application immediately. You can set up a draft application form and update it, and your supporting documentation, until the designated closing date as on the relevant participating country profile.

Once submitted, your application cannot be changed. We strongly advise applicants applying online to do so well before the closing date. OASIS experiences peak usage in the days leading up to the closing date and applicants may experience delays.

Refer to the Applicant's Online User Manual if you need help.

Applying by mail

If you are unable to submit your application online, you can apply by mail. Please check your participating country profile for contact details to obtain a hardcopy application form and any other templates such as referee reports (if applicable).

Completed hard copy application forms and supporting documentation must be submitted by the deadline specified by your country. See the opening and closing dates for each country.

Supporting documentation

Check your participating country profile to see if your country requires additional supporting documents, such as referee reports (template below).

GCSE maths exam good practises

We take an in-depth look at how to revise and pass GCSE maths exams. The guide takes you through 5 steps - how to use past TEST and EXAM papers to actually sit the exam.

Here we summarise what the GCSE examiners expect of you. Click on the link for more information on How to Study and Pass GCSE Maths Exam.

Good practises when doing GCSE maths exam

Skim through the exam papers from the cover page to the last page and every other page in between.

The marks next to the question give you an idea of how many steps are required in the solution. Where there are 3 marks, show all the working out.

  • Cross out any mistake neatly.
  • Include the units where required.
  • Check the time every 20 or 30 minutes.
  • Work through the easy questions, do not spend too much time on the hard question.
  • Check that your answers are reasonable. If you work out the value of x, make a substitution to confirm the value is right.
  • If you have time in the end, come back to the hard question and attempt it.
  • Check and double-check every question in case you missed any before handing in your maths exam paper.

What exam markers are looking for

A clear and logical flow of work is an important factor as far as marking exam papers are concerned. Remember examiners are marking thousands of questions.

So, if your work is clear, logical and reasonable, the markers will have fun marking them. That means that you are likely to get full marks.

  • Show the right answer clearly.
  • Draw neat graphs and label them accurately.
  • You must strive to do the following when answering the GCSE maths exam questions.
  • Set out your work so that it is logically so that it is easy to follow and understand.

Download GCSE Maths past papers

You can download the past GCSE exam papers online. Here are some websites that many students prefer to use.

  • Maths Genie
  • Maths Watch
  • Dr Frost maths
  • Cobette Maths
  • GCSE maths in four weeks

Stationery items you will need for exams are available here: GCSE maths stationery items

Conclusion (Pass GCSE maths exams)

Show your working out clearly and logically. Where there are 3 or more marks, do not only write the answer.
