Alternative Pathways

However, it's important to note that some students may explore alternative options, such as enrolling in programs like the Flexible Open and Distance Education (FODE), or in some cases, returning to their hometowns to pursue other avenues. Each student's unique circumstances and aspirations play a role in determining the path they choose.

Overall, this period is marked by anticipation and optimism as students in Papua New Guinea strive to continue their educational journey and unlock new opportunities for personal and academic growth.

Grade 10 National Exam Results and Selections

The Grade 10 national yearly exam results are usually released just before the Grade 11 Selection Conference on the first week of December.

The 2024 Selection lists for National High and Secondary Schools are, likely, to be published 2 weeks after the release of the results. That means that the selection committee will take a week to finalize the selection, and the education department will take another week to publish the list.

Here we take a look at why the Education Department needs to set the publication dates for the Release of Exam Results and Grade 11 Selection Lists, read about it here.

Grade 12 National Exam Results

The Education Department through the MSD will release the 2023 Grade 12 exam results to the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology (DHERST) around the second week of December.

The Education Department (MSD) conducts the exams, coordinates marking, compiles students' exam marks and sends them to DHERST.

DHERST then uses the marks to select students for higher institutions.

2024 Grade 12 Selections Date

The Grade 12 students can check their examination results on/around December via the Education Department's (NDoE/MSD) website called My PNG Exam Results. This year the results came out on the 8th of December 2023.

Note that DHERST does not process the marks. DHERST usually takes less than a week to process the selection listings for tertiary institutions in the country.

It works in collaboration with universities, colleges, and other tertiary institutions to do the selection. But, first, the institutions MUST tell DHERST their quota - how many students they will accept for the academic year 2024.

So, unless the institutions provide the quotas on time DHERST will not release the listing.

It is important to note that the higher institutions NOT sending the quotas often resulted in delays.

2024 Grade 9 Selection List

The Grade 8 exam marking, results, and Grade 9 selection are the responsibility of the respective provinces. The Department of Education passed this responsibility to the provinces.

The education department will send the Grade 8 certificates to the schools/provinces before the end of December every year. However, many provinces have failed to issue Grade 8 certificates to students.

Eastern Highlands Police Reservist Program 2022 Recruitment

Police Commissioner and Controller of the PNG COVID-19 National Pandemic Response, David Manning, has endorsed the Eastern Highlands Province Police Reservist program to beef up police manpower to address COVID-19 and policing challenges in the province.

Commissioner Manning when signing the memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Eastern Highland Governor Peter Numu on Thursday this week highlighted that Police Reservice have been a great asset to the Constabulary in the early days however, it was discontinued due to the lack of proper command and control.

“With the current COVID-19 crisis coupled with the ongoing law and order situation across the country, we have agreed to revive the Police Reservists program in partnership with provincial governments and other statutory bodies under the revised policies and command structure.

“I want to commend Governor Numu and his administration for the initiative and the commitment to partner with the Constabulary in reviving the police reservist program in their province. This is a win-win approach for the Constabulary and the Province in addressing the current COVID-19 crisis and law and order issues going forward,” Manning said.

Mr Manning further said that the Eastern Highland Province is among the few provinces that have come on board and are currently running similar programs in their respective provinces.

Mr Manning said the Constabulary has set the target to recruit 1,100 Police reservist personnel before the 2022 national general election.

Eastern Highland Governor Peter Numu thanked the Commissioner for the endorsement and his vision to revive the reservist program to address the lack of police manpower in the provinces.

Governor Numu also announced that the Eastern Highlands Police Reservist program will commence with the first 220 successful applicants to undertake reservist training.

“Under my administration, we are ready to run this program and the first batch of 220 successful applicants will go into training immediately. We need more police manpower to assist us with the COVID-19 operations and general policing thus we have taken such drastic action. This is the biggest reservist recruitment compared to other provinces and my administration will continue to sustain this program,” Governor Numu concluded.

What is Tertiary Entrance Rank, TER?

The Tertiary Entrance Rank appears on the Grade 12 students' provisional statement of results they access from My PNG Exam Results website. There are in fact three numbers that appear together: the RANK, the TERTIARY ENTRANCE RANK and the GRADE 12 STUDENT POPULATION.

When will DHERST formally publish the Grade 12 selection List for HEIs?

What is Tertiary Entrance Rank?

The RANK is the Grade 12 student's 'position' relative to the number of Grade 12 students who sat the exams and are graded in that particular year.

The GRADE 12 STUDENT POPULATION as the name implies, is the total population of Grade 12 students who sat the Grade 12 examination in that particular year.

So what is the TERTIARY ENTRANCE RANK?

Tertiary Entrance Rank, TER

The TERTIARY ENTRANCE RANK is basically the total ranking out of 100%.

Though there is no clarity on the criteria used in the PNG Grade 12 TER, it is widely understood that the final TER is inclusive of both the Year 11 and Year 12 internal (SCHOOL-BASED) and external (EXAM) marks.

So if a Grade 12 student's tertiary entrance rank is 80%, it means the student performed above 79% of the whole student population who sat the exams; and 20% of the students performed above that particular student.

TER is Rank, not Mark

Note that the tertiary entrance rank is not a mark. As the name implies, it is a rank.

The TERTIARY ENTRANCE RANK simply shows where you are relative to the general student population who sat for the exam country-wide for a particular year.

All in all, the higher the TER, the better the performance. The lower the TER, the poorer the performance.
