Chinese Government Scholarships Notice For 2024/2025

By the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Educational Cooperation between the Government of the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Government of Papua New Guinea (PNG), the Chinese Government provides scholarships for Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral Programs for eligible PNG candidates to study in China for the academic year 2024/2025.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants for the Master's or Doctoral Programs must be:
  • a PNG Citizen and in good health;
  • under the age of 35 for Master's Programs, under the age of 40 for Doctoral Programs;
  • have a Bachelor's Degree or higher, and;
  • have a release letter from the employer if employed.

Applicants for the Bachelor's Program must be:
  • a PNG Citizen and in good health;
  • under the age of 25, and;
  • have a Grade 12 Higher School Certificate with good academic performance of 2.5 GPA or above.

Main Requirements

Applicants are required to submit certified photocopies or relevant mandatory application documents listed below:

  • Printed Online Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship after online application;
  • Copy of Passport Home Page: Applicants shall submit a clear scanned copy of his/her ordinary passport with validity later than March 1st, 2025;
  • Notarized Upper Secondary School Certificates (Grade 12) with Transcripts (for Bachelor's programs), notarized Bachelor's Degree Certificate with Transcripts (for Master's programs), notarized Master's Degree Certificate with Transcripts (for Doctoral programs);
  • Pre-Admission Documents. All applicants must provide a pre-admission document issued by the universities applying. These include a pre-admission notice issued by the international student's admission department or an invitation letter from the schools or professors;
  • A Study Plan or Research Proposal in Chinese or English (A minimum of 200 words for undergraduates, 800 words for postgraduates);
  • Application for Master's or Doctoral programs must submit two (2) letters of recommendation in Chinese or English from professors or associate professors;
  • A photocopy of the Foreigner Physical Examination Form completed in English and from a recognized clinic. (The physical examinations should cover all the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Only complete records or those with the attending physician's signature, the hospital's official stamp or sealed photographs of the applicants are valid. Please select the appropriate time for physical examinations as the results are only valid for six (6) months);
  • Non-criminal record report (Police Clearance) issued within six (6) months prior to the submission date of the application;
  • HSK Certificate (for Bachelor's programs);
  • Applicants under the age of eighteen (18) should submit the valid documents of their legal guardians in China;
  • A Character Reference Letter from a Parish Priest/Pastor/Church Elder (with a valid contact number);
  • Birth Certificate, NID card, Driver's License.

The full application must be submitted in the order of preferences listed above.

  • education, 
  • history, 
  • liberal arts and 
  • philosophy. 
(DHERST advises not to apply for programs not listed above).

How to Apply Online for Chinese Government Scholarships 2024/2025

Visit the CSC Study in China website and click 'Scholarship Application for Students' at https://www.campuschina.org. Register an account through [CREATE AN ACCOUNT] and login with your account. The 'Program Category' is: Type A and the Agency Number is: 5981.

You can also visit the DHERST website www.dherst.gov.pg to download the Foreigner Physical Examination Form and Instructions of the Chinese Scholarship Online Application Information System to guide you.

Application Deadline

The applications should reach the office no later than Friday, 9th February, 2024. All applicants must apply online and submit two (2) hard copies of the application form. Failure to apply online will automatically disqualify your application.

Faxed and emailed applications will not be accepted.

Please take note of the following important points

Applicants are advised to take heed of the few amendments to the scholarship program before submitting their applications:

The Bachelor's program is a full Chinese language study program

The scholarship package for 2024 does not include domestic and international travel expenses (going and returning tickets).

Please contact the universities you are applying to to get a pre-admission notice before submitting your online application.

DHERST advises applicants not to apply for programs that are not specified under the priority areas.

If you are still waiting to receive a response from DHERST or the Chinese Embassy in PNG after the 20th of April, 2024, then please consider your application as being unsuccessful.

200 Chinese Scholarship for PNG Students

The Chinese government has announced a new scholarship program for teachers and students at the Butuka School of Excellence in Papua New Guinea (PNG). The program, which will award 200 scholarships annually, is designed to strengthen educational ties between the two countries and promote cooperation and friendship.

200 Chinese Scholarship 

The scholarship program will provide 100 scholarships for teacher exchange programs and 100 scholarships for student summer camp programs. This breakdown reflects the Chinese government's commitment to supporting all aspects of education in PNG, from professional development for teachers to enriching experiences for students.

The scholarships are open to teachers and students of all disciplines, but priority will be given to those who are studying or teaching in STEM fields, such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. 

Applicants must also be citizens of Papua New Guinea and meet the academic and other requirements of the Butuka School of Excellence.

2024 Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (Global UGRAD) for PNG Students

The Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (Global UGRAD) provides a diverse group of emerging student leaders with a scholarship for one semester of non-degree academic study at a U.S. college or university. 

Global UGRAD is a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State.

Global UGRAD aims to recruit participants from underrepresented backgrounds who have not had other opportunities to study in the United States. 

Successful applicants can expect in-depth exposure to U.S. society, culture, and academic institutions, as well as opportunities to enhance their professional skills.

2023 Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (Global UGRAD) for PNG Uni Students -  UGRAD application form 2023 application deadline


Global UGRAD is administered by World Learning

All participants will be enrolled in full-time, non-degree, undergraduate coursework chosen from their host institution’s existing curriculum. Participants will be required to take one, 3-credit U.S. studies course to enhance their understanding of the United States. 

Participants will live in campus housing facilities with American peers and will be required to participate in twenty hours of community service. There will also be a virtual arrival orientation and an in-person end-of-program workshop.

Candidates from the Pacific Islands countries are eligible. Global UGRAD is administered by World Learning on behalf of its funder, the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Program Eligibility

Global UGRAD is open to all academic fields of study and does not discriminate on the basis of race, colour, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, or disability.

The Global UGRAD Program is open to anyone who meets the following criteria:

  • Applicants must be a citizen of Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands or Vanuatu to apply for the Global UGRAD Program.
  • Applicants must be studying in Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands or Vanuatu to apply for the Global UGRAD Program.
  • Scholarships will be granted to students who currently are enrolled in full-time undergraduate programs only, having completed a minimum of their first semester of study. Participants must have at least one semester or an equivalent term to complete at their home institutions upon completion of the Global UGRAD Program.
  • Applicants should demonstrate leadership potential through academic work, community involvement, and extracurricular activities.
  • Applicants must achieve a minimum TOEFL score of 48iBT.
  • Preference will be given to those who have had little or NO experience in the United States or outside of their home countries.
  • Has a solid command of written and spoken English (English Language training for some finalists is possible);
  • Able to begin studies in the U.S. in January 2024 (selected participants may not defer to a later date);
  • Eligible to receive and maintain the U.S. student exchange visa (J-1) required for the program;
  • Applicants are over 18 years of age.
  • Cleared by a physician to participate in the program

Individuals in the following circumstances are NOT eligible for the Global UGRAD Program:

  • U.S. citizens and permanent residents of the United States;
  • Individuals currently studying, residing, or working outside of their home country;
  • Anyone who has already graduated from university
  • Local employees of the U.S. missions abroad who work for the U.S. Department of State and/or the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID); employees are also ineligible for one year following the termination of employment;
  • Immediate family members (i.e. spouses and children) of U.S. Department of State and USAID employees; family members are also ineligible for one year following the termination of employment;
  • Current World Learning employees and their immediate family members

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the Chinese Government Scholarship 2024, applicants must meet the following requirements:

1. Be a citizen of a country other than China.
2. Be in good health both physically and mentally.
3. Have a bachelor's degree or its equivalent.
4. Be under the age of 35.
5. Have a strong academic background and a good command of English.
