Papua New Guinea Coffee Unique Taste Begs More Export

Do you know that PNG produces the best coffee among the organic coffee producing nations in the World? The recent competition revealed that it was highly ranked.

In a tasting competition in the United States of America in 2013 PNG was ranked third, that is 3rd, in the World among the best samples collected and tested by ECOM.

ECOM International coffee competition ranks PNG high

ECOM is an organisation promoting small coffee growers around the World. The ECOM competition is not only a ranking venture, but also a recognition adventure. The statement below is what the World Finance Corporation (WFC) said about the ECOM vision.
"IFC has worked with ECOM Coffee Group, a global leader in the coffee trade, to help small coffee farmers meet international certification standards, improve sustainability and productivity of crops, and increase their earnings."

Sihereni coffee estate

The the Sihereni coffee estate, owned and operated by David Orimarie in the Kwonghi area of Upper Asaro Local Level Government in Daulo District of Eastern Highlands Province was ranked in the top 5!

This is not about the owner, nor is it about Eastern Highlands Province (I am not from the E.H.P to say this). It is about Papua New Guinea Coffee!

Imagine exposing the Simbu Coffee, or Hagen Coffee, or Wabag Coffee, or Morobe Coffee or Kerema Coffee to market in Europe, the Americas or central Asia? The market out there is going to go 'wild' about the TASTE of the coffee produced in those areas.

If you are from a coffee growing area, you may leave a comment below (or tweet PNG Insight). Tell me if PNG Coffee has gotten its fair share of the World's coffee market.

Renew PNG Passport: What To Do and Documents Needed Attaching

Many statutory bodies, including the PNG Immigration and Citizenship Services Authority (ICSA), demand the need to show the National Identification (NID) card or the *new* Birth Certificate. There is, however, a real difficulty getting the card or the certificate to produce as evidence of citizenship at present. The delay can frustrate attempts to obtain a new passport too.

I read the information on the ICSA website regarding passport applications. And, at first, found it confusing especially *renewing* my passport. I assumed that since certain requirements changed, my *old* birth certificate was now invalid. I would have to go through the whole process of getting a new birth certificate or NID card. Fortunately, this was not the case.

In fact, it was easy and straightforward because I had already got my passport to present as evidence of citizenship. So, I thought I should share my experience to help others wanting to *renew* their passports.

As implied earlier, while fearing my application was likely to have the wrong attachments (and hence renewal delayed), I made several trips to the ICSA office at Waigani, Port Moresby, to get some answers.

To download the PNG passport application form (PDF Fillable), click here

How to renew PNG Passport
Hong Kong Central - PNG passport holders get Visa On Arrival

Q1. When to submit passport for renewal/extension of the expiry date

Submit the application 6 months before the due date. For example, for a passport that expires on the 6th of December 2023, the holder should submit their application after the 6th of June 2023.
This is important because those wanting to travel out of the country will have to have at least 6 months validity in their passports (same as travelling into the country)

Q2. What to do to renew an adult passport

  • Passport -  You do not need a National Identification card or birth certificate. Your evidence of citizenship is the existing passport. (If you are applying for a *new* passport, you are required to produce the NID card.)
  • Passport photos - two passport photos must be signed and stamped by *a* legal/authorised person.
  • Section 13 of the passport application form must be signed and stamped by *the* legal/authorised person.
  • Write a brief but convincing statement about why your application should be considered favourably.
  • Include the travel details (Section 10) if you have dates and flights booked/planned travel in advance.
  • Processing Fee - pay (see processing fees below) at the Vulupindi Haus and attach the receipt.

Q3. What to do to renew a child passport

  • Passport -  same as above
  • Passport photos - same as above
  • Section 13 of the passport application form - same as above
  • Write a brief but convincing statement about why your application should be considered favourably.
  • Include the travel details (Section 10) if you have dates and flights booked/planned travel.
  • Processing Fee - same as above
Additional documents
  • Birth Certificate - attach the child's birth certificate whether your child is born overseas or in PNG.
  • Parents' Passport bio page - attach a copy of both mother's and father's (or legal guardian's) passport bio page.
  • Section 9 (parents/legal guardians' consent) is completed as required
For the applicants wanting to get a new passport, please refer to the Immigration and Citizenship Services Authority website.

Top tip. Make sure you have followed all the instructions on PAGE 1 of the passport application form. If you are still in doubt, take your application to the ICSA office. Cross-check with the staff at the office. Finalise your application properly before submitting it.

PNG Passport Processing Fee

The normal processing fee is K100. It takes 15 working days (3 weeks) to process the application.

You can pay K300 to fast-track your application. It only takes 2 days to process the application if you pay K200 more.

Dealing with passport agents

Many Papua New Guineans and foreigners use passport agents in Port Moresby to process their passports and visas. Passport agents are everyday people who are front up at the immigration office at Waigani all day, only some are real businesses.

So, be careful when you deal with them.

If you are in Port Moresby (or travelling in) this information should be sufficient to get your passport ready and pick it up.

Best of all, it can be challenging to do it the first time. But, if you do it yourself, you'll find it easy to do it again.

Varirata National Park: Port Moresby's Best Kept Secret - Must See

The park is less than an hour’s drive from Port Moresby, Varirata National Park covers 1,063 hectares inhabited by all the main iconic species of Papua New Guinea.

I visited several fun places both within and outside Port Moresby but my recent visit stood out - Varirata National Park. To be honest I did not think the visit was going to be fun. It, however, turned out to be an enjoyable trip.

Other fun places to visit in Port Moresby

  • Port Moresby Adventure Park
  • Sunset Lodge
  • Loloata Island Resort
  • Koitaki Country Club
  • Varirata Natioanl Park
  • Kokoda Track Memorial
  • Bomana War Cemetry
  • Tutu Beach

Varirata National Park is at an elevation between 600 and 900 metres. The park is rich with a variety of ecosystems and landscapes and plants and animals.

The Park offers four tracks to explore its untamed nature, discover its unique plants and observe its extraordinary wildlife.

How to visit varirata national park
New buildings are erected to serve as the Information Centre

As I mentioned earlier, the park is a must-visit as is the best way to get away from Port Moresby. There are five important things that make Varirata  National Park special.

1. The road condition can be described as excellent. From the turn-off to the look-out and all around the park was sealed and in superb condition. Grasses are trimmed neat and tidy.

2. The BBQ areas and huts are well kept and in very good condition.

3. Cheap to visit - residents pay only K2.00 per head and external visitors pay K5.00 per head. The caretakers of the park will be happy to show you around.

4. Beautiful view of the surrounding places from the look-out; looking out to Loloata, Port Moreby, Jacksons Airport and the nearby mountain ranges.

5. Nature Walk and Fresh Air - nothing beats the fresh air from the forest. There are lots of animals and plants to see and adore.

Bush Walking

Varirata National Park is a fantastic place for bushwalking. A great variety of vegetation from woodland to rainforest, beautiful butterflies, huge ferns, wild orchids, fresh air and lookouts with its spectacular views of Bootless Bay.

Five out of the thirty-five species of birds of paradise live in the park, and PNG’s National Emblem, the Raggiana, is without any doubt, is the guest of honour.

Between April and October, during peak breeding season, there is an excellent chance of seeing some males in full breeding plumage dancing to attract female attention.

Top tip: If you really what to get the best out of your trip to Varirata National Park, I would recommend enlisting a local guide to take you around the walks through the forest. You can ask for guides or assistance at the main entrance.

Go prepared with cash, food, water, sunscreen and bug repellent. As for the serious walkers, this could be a recurring visit once you've done it the first time.

You've got to visit Varirata National Park if you have been living in Port Moresby, but have not visited the park yet.

Bird Watching

Varirata National Conservation Park is famous among birdwatchers for its birds of paradise, accessible by road. Here are some species of birds you can see at the park:
  • Raggiana bird of paradise,
  • cassowaries,
  • hornbills,
  • kingfishers,
  • cuscus,
  • forest wallabies,
  • echidna,
  • bandicoots,
  • possums,
  • green pythons...

Infomation about Varirata National Park

The Varirata National Park recently opened its new Information Centre at Sogeri outside of Port Moresby. The modern information centre will enhance visitors experience of the nature park.

The park is already popular with schools excursions, bird watching, weekend outings for city residents and nature tours. PNGTPA is a partner in the development of the Variarata National Park through setting up signboards and working with JICA to develop bird watching attractions in the nature park.

Grade 12 Students Admissions and Selections for UPNG, UOG, UNRE, Unitech, DWU and PAU

The Grade 12 Online Selection 2018 (for tertiary institutions) in the country can be described as the best change the DHERST (Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology) has implemented.

The result of the selection process had shown that the method was time-and-money saving, fast and efficient.

We also provide some background information on the 6 PNG universities here. Find out about the admissions and selections  for UPNG, UOG, UNRE, Unitech, DWU and PAU:

PNG Universities acceptance list pdf 2024

The tables below contained raw data compiled from the selection document (PDF) published on the DHERST website. The raw data simply aims to show readers and stakeholders the number of spaces (and the spaces available per program of study) at the 6 universities.

Perhaps it is important to know that no significant increase in the number of spaces had been observed across the 6 main universities.

For example, previous records indicated 594 students in 2016, 495 students in 2017 and 599 students selected to UNITECH Lae three Campus; and 286 students in 2016, 297 students in 2017 and 280 students selected to Divine Word University four campus. In fact, spaces at universities remain relatively the same.

*Note that this is the online selection done by DHERST - not by the universities. Each selected student will be issued an offer letter and formally invited to the academic year at the selected university.

**Also note that figure 3204 does NOT include other tertiary institutions in the country. It is indicative of the 6 universities mentioned here.

NEW INTAKES SELECTION LIST AVAILABLE - Press Statement DHERST

The Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST) is delighted to provide the complete list of the Grade 12 school leavers who have been selected through the Online Selection System to registered tertiary institutions for the 2018 academic year is listed below. This is the complete list and it is available on the DHERST website.

Check out the latest post on DHERST Selections and Grade 12 results here.

With the inaugural use of the Online Selection System, a total of 12,234 students have been allocated to a study program (47% of the 25,848 who applied).

All students with a GPA of 2.3 and above that met respective GPA and subject related entry requirements were allocated space within a Higher Education Institution (HEI). First and Second Preferences indicated by the Grade 12 School Leavers were used to allocate a place at a HEI while GPA and subject related entry requirements were used for ranking of the selection list.

All other Grade 12 School Leavers that selected the option to be considered for alternate offers were allocated space in the program to which they exclusively met the entry requirement and also to which additional space was available.

New intakes from this list will receive admissions offer letter or notice from Universities and their respective tertiary institution.
We also would like to advise the public that one institution initially provided the DHERST with incorrect student quota. The institution overestimated its own capacity hence it will enroll less students.

Note that this list is not a Tertiary Education Scholarship Assistance Scheme (TESAS) awards list. The DHERST will inform all TESAS awardees through separate offer letters. Any selected student who does not receive a TESAS offer letter from DHERST should consider himself/herself to be a self-sponsored student.

Any offers given outside of theOnline Selection Systemwill not be considered for national scholarship (TESAS).

Should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact Ms Lenita Mike on the phone 301 2078, email Lenita.Mike@dherst.gov.pg or Shirley Isaiah on 301 2087, email Shirley.Isaiah@dherst.gov.pg.

This selection would not be possible without the commitment of our Universities and other Higher Education Institution as well as the staff at the DHERST and our partner PCG Academia a company that successfully serves higher education sectors in the USA, Canada, Europe and now PNG. I sincerely thank you all for your collaboration and assistance offered.

I would very much appreciate if Universities and other Higher Education Institutions could provide their input by end of March 2018 on how we could further improve on the selection processes and the most important what additional criteria your Institution would like to add to this software. Thus, next year we will provide you with better services. Please forward your input to the Deputy Secretary Operation Mr Steven Matainaho on this email: Steven.Matainaho@dherst.gov.pg or  steven.matainaho@icloud.com

I take this opportunity to wish you all a Blessed Christmas and a fulfilling New Year. May the light of Christmas give you love, peace and happiness.

God Bless Papua New Guinea!

Petrol Price: 10 Percent Increase Early 2018 to K3.50 Per Litre, Port Moresby

Petrol price has increased by 7.27% in 5 months to December 2017. The increase may have looked small, but it isn't. Here is how much less petrol a customer gets since September 2017 - 2 Litres *less* on a full tank refilled.

At the current trend,  petrol users are likely to pay a 10% increase as early as January 2018. The table shows the price of petrol between September and December from a Service Station in Port Moresby. *Prices are based on actual receipts, dated.

January 2018 petrol price based on the average increase projected

Petrol price was fairly stable in September, but started increasing on the second week of October.

The bar graph shows the exponential increase of over 7% between September and December 2017 and 9% to January 2018.

In fact, when a consumer refills petrol in December, (and at 7% increase), they get  70 millilitres *less* for every Litre of petrol (bought at K3.432 per Litre) compared to the September and 10th October 2017 price (K3.195 per Litre). That means that:
  • For 10 Litres of petrol, consumers get 700 mL *less*;
  •  A near-full tank of approximately 30 Litres, the customers get 2100 mL *less*, that is 2.1 L less!
By January next year consumers are likely to pay K3.50 per Litre of petrol - the highest petrol price. And, users will realise how less petrol they get. K3.50 is a conservative estimate.

There is a need to find out why the price is increasing and whether the increases (in October, November and December) have been monitored.

Online Maths Games for Kids and Toddlers

Giving children an early start in education is every parent's wish. Many studies have supported the fact that preparing children early - before they start school - sets the foundation for future success in school.

For keen parents wanting to give their children a better start, there are many educational programs (and smartphone apps) available for free; as well as those that are purchasable.

But, knowing the right option, age-appropriate for younger children can be a hassle.

This post identifies one highly recommended learning program for children - Reading Eggs.

Online Maths Games for Kids and Toddlers

The Reading Eggs is a fun-filled educational software for children ages 3 years old to 13 years old.

Parents of children who've used the software have seen *significant* improvement in their children's ability to read and write and learn about numbers.

Why Reading Eggs?

The Maths Factor is another learning program available, but I am also a fan of the Reading Eggs. One of the best features of Reading Eggs is the *Reward*.

The Reading Eggs reward system motivates kids to keep exploring and learning.  My kids have used it since they were 3 years old – fantastic learning program, highly recommended.

Here is a brief citation from Reading Eggs:

“Children love the games, songs, golden eggs and other rewards which, along with feeling proud of their reading, really motivate children to keep exploring and learning.” Reading Egg (accessed 23/11/2017)

Reading Eggs Maths Online Games

Many parents of young children have recommended Reading Eggs. Your children can have fun and learn to read, early, both at home or when you are out and about.

Perhaps giving children the best start early in life is the best thing to do as parents. This paves way for both academic success and success in life - reading is a life skill and every child should know how to read.

The best way to learn how to read is to learn about LETTER SOUNDS. Find out how you can help your child learn letter sounds as the first of the 5 steps of learning to read by following the link.

Reading Eggs Fun

The 5 points are the main reasons why Reading Eggs is proven to be popular among many parents:
  • 1.  Cater for children ages 3 – 13 years old;
  • 2. Highly interactive and reward-based – children play, earn points and learn;
  • 3. Accessible via Personal (Home) Computers and Smartphones;
  • 4. *Free* online trial permitted - no need to enter bank card details prior to the unlimited free trial;
  • 5. Over 90% of parents indicated noticeable *improvement* in their children.
