2021 Grade 12 Students SLF Grace Period - Why GP is Important

2021 DHERST GRACE PERIOD: Present Grade 12 students are in a privileged position to make the right choices on their Grade 12 School Leavers.

DHERST Online Application 2021 (NAOS)

Firstly, the National Online Application System (NOAS) gives the students the right choice upfront by highlighting (in red) the 'ineligible' options. There is no room for getting the choices wrong. Secondly, the students have 5 choices. That means 5 chances of getting into a tertiary institution.

In the past, the Grade 12 students did not have the chance to change their choices after they've filled the manual School Leaver's Form (SLF). Nor do the past students have 5 choices, they were limited to only 3 choices.

The Grade 12 students should make full use of the Grace period and maximise their chances of securing a space for 2022 at a tertiary institution in the country.

2021 Grace Period - Why it is important

The Grace period lasts only 5 days. This is the time when Grade 12 students should 'adjust' their choices. It should be straightforward because DHERST would have indicated on NOAS whether a student is eligible for selection or not depending on the examinations marks.

Here is what DHERST say about the importance of the Grace Period, 2021:

''This [Grace Period] is a crucial period where you will start making your choices based on your final grade 12 results hence make sure to access your account during the mentioned dates. If you see the red highlight indicated in any of your five choices under “My Choices”, this means that your final result has not met the minimum program requirement set by the institution. Therefore, you must change the red highlighted choice to a different program that is available in your program list.'' DHERST

The online selection is quick. The Grade 12 students in the country have between Tuesday 14th December and Friday 17th December 2021 to adjust their choices to the more suitable ones. DHERST will NOT grant you access to making changes during the weekend or on Monday the 20th of December 2021.

Important 2021 Dates and Expectations

Here are some important dates for examinations, results and selections in Papua New Guinea:

  • DHERST launches 2021 selection for 2022 academic year: Tuesday 21st December 2021
  • NOAS grace period: Tuesday 14th - Friday 17th December 2021
  • Education Officers/GES start 2022 Grade 11 Selections: 5th December 2021
  • NDoE/MSD publishes Grade 10 national exam results: Late Nov - Early December 2021
  • Grade 10 and 12 Exam Marks and Data Cleansing: Completed by late Nov 2021 in time for the release of 2021 exam results to students, selectors and stakeholders.
  • Grade 8, 10 and 12 Exam marking: October  - Nov 2021
  • Grade 10 National Examinations: 11th to 15th October 2021.
  • Grade 12 National Examinations:  18th to 22nd October 2021.
  • Grade 8 National Examinations: 25th to 28th October 2021.
Based on the dates above we can infer that the 2021/2022 Grade 11 selection lists will be released one or two weeks after the 5th of December 2021.

DHERST has confirmed that it will launch the Grade 12 selection list on the 21st of December 2021.

Launching 2021 selection for 2022 academic year

The online selection via DHERST's National Online Selections System (NOSS) will do the magic in 3 days.

DHERST plans to launch the 2021 selections for the 2022 academic year on Tuesday 21st December 2021.

There were issues last year when the Department of Higher Education had to republish the selection listing. If all goes to plan this year, students are likely to see their selection status by the date announced by DHERST. We hope all goes to plan.

CONTENT STEALING NOTICE TO PNG INSIGHT READERS

  • PNG INSIGHT contents were duplicated and published on a foreign website. We know that this *content scrapping* does not do anyone, any good. We are using the same heading to direct our readers to the right pages with up-to-date information.
  • CONTENT SCRAPPING is for those that have ulterior motives - that is to misdirect readers at their own convenience. We have reported this to GOOGLE in the hope that Google will penalise that website.
  • REFRAIN from using a foreign website that has duplicate content. The person behind the *stealing of our contents and images* has an ulterior motive. And DOES NOT aim to provide relevant information. We believe it is an ASIAN website. Dodgy.
  • WE will continue to provide relevant information for our readers. Please refer to the links below for the updated information on DHERST TESAS Selection List 2021

Here are the original articles where the images and words are taken from:

This is just one instance of stolen and replicated content.

We know that content scrappers do steal content and we care less. But, we are concerned that these replicated contents can, potentially, mislead the readers. The content *that website* published has been stolen from different articles on our blog and website.

For example, the image on the stolen article (see below) does not reflect information in it. The image, in fact, was about how to Calculate GPA. Whereas the content is about Grade 12 Selection Listing for 2021.

The years have been changed, but completely misrepresented the original articles, though we had the original articles published under logical times, different headings and with clear instructions.

This is an important article with Grade 12 historical data that we compiled over the years. As such, we know when to update the articles and present them in a timely manner. We plan to update the data in the article for 2020 using the official DHERST selection list for 2021.

There are key articles on our blog and website that we update to reflect the changes and documents released by DHERST and NDoE.

Again, we ask our readers to refrain from visiting any foreign website that has duplicated content. It can be misleading and misdirected towards PNG readers.

What the person copying Our contents and Image should do

The better thing that foreign website could do is to use:

  • proper attribution (without links to the article, but a mention where the content originated from),
  • disclaimer (state a brief of where the content/article is taken from and provide link/s to the original article).
By doing one of the above acknowledgements will guide readers to the right page so that all (readers, original content producers and content-scrappers) benefit. Sadly, this website deleted all our internal links. There was no acknowledgement of our work. As mentioned, their motive is ulterior and does not aim to inform and help readers.

2021 selected students on tertiary scholarships

Last year DHERST (Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology) published the Grade 12 Selection List on the 18th of December.

The selected students were awarded a government’s scholarship under two categories. The PNG government’s higher education scholarship is called TESAS (the Tertiary Education Scholarship Assistant Scheme).

TESAS is classed into either HECAS (the High Education Contribution Assistance Scheme) and AES (the Academic Excellence Scholarship). If a student is not awarded one of the government’s scholarships, then the student is considered Self-sponsored. The numbers of students awarded each scholarship in 2021 are given below.

In a press release, the department of higher education said the students whose names appeared on the Grade 12 selection list must take note the following:

(1) Your personal details contained within your application has been forwarded to the Higher Education Institution which has selected you.

( 2) You should expect to receive an admissions offer letter directly from your Higher Education Institution (HEI). The HEI will communicate directly with you to inform you on specific details.

( 3) If your Study Program receives scholarship awards from the National Government, you may be eligible for financial support through the Tertiary Education Student Assistance Scheme (TESAS). Your TESAS status is also indicated in this National Selection List. The students’ names are not on the selection list last year. Presumably, if it is the same this year, students can not use their names when searching. The best detail to use is the student’s number on School Leaver’s Form (SLF).

Grade 12 selected students NOT on tertiary institutions scholarship

It is perhaps important to note that about 50% of the Grade 12 students names on the Grade 12 selection list are NOT awarded a government's scholarship (AES or HECAS) last year.

They are, therefore, classified as self-sponsored students. (Here is a list of ideas about what to do to get a scholarship if you are a self-sponsored student).

But, what if a student's name is completely NOT on the Grade 12 selection list?  Here is what DHERST had to say about it in 2019:
We would like to inform you that your application has now been moved into the NOSS Admissions Pool.
In the event that a higher education institution was not able to achieve 100 percent yield in the National Selections, your application may be considered from within the NOSS Admissions Pool. Should this happen, please log in to the NOAS (apply.dherst.gov.pg) and check MyStatus section prior to 31st December 2018.
Also take note that in the event that a selected Grade 12 school leaver does not accept his/her admission offer, your application may also be considered from within the National Admissions’ Pool. Should this happen, please log in to the NOAS (apply.dherst.gov.pg) and check MyStatus section throughout February of 2019.
If you have not achieved a GPA above 2.0 it may NOT be likely that your application will be considered from within the National Admission Pool. It is therefore highly recommended that you consider upgrading your marks with an intent to re-apply for further studies as a Non-School Leaver. Do not give up![DHERST , Press Release 2019]
