Grade 12 Selection Lists for PNG Tertiary Institutions 2024 DHERST

The Department of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology (DHERST) released the National Selection results for the 2024 academic year on the 23 of December 2023. This marks an important milestone in the selection process conducted through the National Online Selection System (NOSS). The placements for successful Grade 12 school leavers seeking admission to tertiary institutions across Papua New Guinea are now out.

Note that the Grade 12 selection Lists for PNG Tertiary Institutions 2024 do not have the TESAS status of the students. That means that Grade 12 students will have to confirm the scholarship status in their NOAS accounts. More info is given below.

PNG Tertiary Institutions 2024 Successful Applicants

Here is what DHERST said about the students on the Grade 12 selection Lists for PNG Tertiary Institutions 2024:

  • Seamless Transition: Your application details have been securely transmitted to your chosen Higher Education Institution (HEI), facilitating a smooth onboarding process.
  • Official Admissions Offer: Expect to receive an admissions offer letter directly from your selected HEI outlining acceptance procedures, important dates, and any additional requirements.
  • Potential TESAS Eligibility: Congratulations if your chosen program qualifies for the Tertiary Education Student Assistance Scheme (TESAS)! Check your TESAS status on the NOAS platform (apply.dherst.gov.pg) by the third week of January 2024 for scholarship details.

For Non-Selected Applicants

  • Admissions Pool Consideration: Your application remains active in the NOSS Admissions Pool. Should any HEIs have vacancies after the National Selections, your application may still be considered. Regularly check your MyStatus section on the NOAS platform from December 2023 to March 2024 for updates.
  • FODE Second-chance Pathway: If your GPA falls below 2.0, consider upgrading your Grade 12 marks and apply as non-school leavers. Remember, the path to tertiary education remains open through the FODE and open learning pathways.

DHERST Grade 12 Selection (NOAS & NOSS)

Exams Results and 2024 Selections Dates - Grade 12, 10 and 8

The period from October 2023 to January 2024 holds great excitement for students in Papua New Guinea as they await the release of the 2023 Exam Results and the commencement of the 2024 Selections.

Students in Grade 10, Grade 12, and Grade 8 eagerly anticipate the opportunity to progress in their education.

2023 DEC Updates: List of 2023 Top Performing Schools in PNG now available - click here. You can also find out about How the Grade 11 Selection Committee does the selection in this article.

Exams Results and 2024 Selections Dates

For Grade 10 students, this means transitioning to Grade 11 or vocational centres, where they can further their academic pursuits or acquire practical skills.

Grade 12 students, on the other hand, aspire to secure admission into tertiary institutions, which will pave the way for their higher education journey.

Similarly, Grade 8 students eagerly anticipate moving up to Grade 9, marking a significant step in their educational progression.

Click here for the latest update on ''2024 Selections Dates''.

Alternative Pathways

However, it's important to note that some students may explore alternative options, such as enrolling in programs like the Flexible Open and Distance Education (FODE), or in some cases, returning to their hometowns to pursue other avenues. Each student's unique circumstances and aspirations play a role in determining the path they choose.

Overall, this period is marked by anticipation and optimism as students in Papua New Guinea strive to continue their educational journey and unlock new opportunities for personal and academic growth.

Grade 10 National Exam Results and Selections

The Grade 10 national yearly exam results are usually released just before the Grade 11 Selection Conference on the first week of December.

The 2024 Selection lists for National High and Secondary Schools are, likely, to be published 2 weeks after the release of the results. That means that the selection committee will take a week to finalize the selection, and the education department will take another week to publish the list.

Here we take a look at why the Education Department needs to set the publication dates for the Release of Exam Results and Grade 11 Selection Lists, read about it here.

Grade 12 National Exam Results

The Education Department through the MSD will release the 2023 Grade 12 exam results to the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology (DHERST) around the second week of December.

The Education Department (MSD) conducts the exams, coordinates marking, compiles students' exam marks and sends them to DHERST.

DHERST then uses the marks to select students for higher institutions.

2024 Grade 12 Selections Date

The Grade 12 students can check their examination results on/around December via the Education Department's (NDoE/MSD) website called My PNG Exam Results. This year the results came out on the 8th of December 2023.

Note that DHERST does not process the marks. DHERST usually takes less than a week to process the selection listings for tertiary institutions in the country.

It works in collaboration with universities, colleges, and other tertiary institutions to do the selection. But, first, the institutions MUST tell DHERST their quota - how many students they will accept for the academic year 2024.

So, unless the institutions provide the quotas on time DHERST will not release the listing.

It is important to note that the higher institutions NOT sending the quotas often resulted in delays.

2024 Grade 9 Selection List

The Grade 8 exam marking, results, and Grade 9 selection are the responsibility of the respective provinces. The Department of Education passed this responsibility to the provinces.

The education department will send the Grade 8 certificates to the schools/provinces before the end of December every year. However, many provinces have failed to issue Grade 8 certificates to students.

Read about this failure and how the Education authorities Do the Grade 9 Selections.

We will update this table as the selection lists for 2024 are released by the institutions and DHERST.

Note that DHERST will release the University and Non-University Selection Lists on the 23rd of December 2023. Students can view their selection STATUS through their individual National Online Application Accounts.

For NSL and overseas students, check the table to see if your institution publishes the 2024 Non-School Leavers (NSL), Grade 12 School Leavers (SL) or Continuing Students (SC) listings, as we update the lists this year.

The two groups of new intakes are the Grade 12 school leavers and non-school leavers, whereas the continuing students are students progressing to years 2, 3, and 4 or have continued on from the other programs last year.

The universities also publish the list of post-graduate students on their websites around this time of the year. So be sure to check their websites if you have applied for a post-graduate study.

One important thing to check is the student's status on the selection/admission lists. We mention it because the status indicates whether you are on the govt scholarship (TESAS) or not.

If you are indicated as SELF, you are either a self-sponsored student, an overseas-based student or a corporate-sponsored. You'll have to make the fee arrangements before registering at the university you are selected to attend.

PNG Universities Selection Status Update

Many universities tend to release the PDF lists of Continuing Students List before the New Students Lists (i.e. the Grade 12 School Leavers and Non-School Leavers) list for 2023.

Last year, the University of Goroka released the names of the continuing students before they went for the Christmas Holiday. So, if you are a continuing student from UoG you should know your 2023 status by now.

From past experience, the Grade 12 selection list for the tertiary institution in the country will be published by DHERST on its website.

The DHERST selection list contains the names of new intakes for the universities and non-universities. It is a comprehensive list. Here is what it said around this time last year.

''The selection list for school leavers to university has not been released by DHERST yet, though they have promised to release it on the 8th of January 2021. Understandably, a public holiday was declared on this day, and we hope DHERST will let the public know about the change of date, soon.''

Non-school leavers' selection list 2024

The non-school leavers' selection list is usually published after the school leaver and continuing students lists. Perhaps it is important to know that the list will be published by the university of your choice, not DHERST. So you must check with the university!

The universities will publish the non-school leavers' selection list PDF before the academic year starts. One top tip is to check your preferred uni website for last year's selection list of non-school leavers. This will give you a good idea about WHEN they are likely to release the 2023 selection list for the non-school leavers' intake.

We are delighted to also know that for the first time last year (2021), Western Pacific University in the highlands of PNG will enrol 240 students in the foundation year.

The new Western Pacific University in Southern Highlands Province offers programs in:
  • International Business Management (BA) - 6 Semesters  (3 years);
  • E-Business and Digital Marketing (BA) - 6 Semesters (3 years); and
  • Computer Science (Engineering, BA) - 7 Semesters (3 years).

CONTENT STEALING NOTICE TO PNG INSIGHT READERS

  • PNG INSIGHT contents were duplicated and published on a foreign website. We know that this *content scrapping* does not do anyone, any good. We are using the same heading to direct our readers to the right pages with up-to-date information.
  • CONTENT SCRAPPING is for those that have ulterior motives - that is to misdirect readers at their own convenience. We have reported this to GOOGLE in the hope that Google will penalise that website.
  • REFRAIN from using a foreign website that has duplicate content. The person behind the *stealing of our content and images* has an ulterior motive. And DOES NOT aim to provide relevant information. We believe it is an ASIAN website. Dodgy.
  • We will continue to provide relevant information for our readers. Please refer to the links below for the updated information on the DHERST TESAS Selection List

Here are the original articles which the images and words are taken from:

This is just one instance of stolen and replicated content.

We know that content scrappers do steal content and we care less. But, we are concerned that these replicated contents can, potentially, mislead the readers. The content *that website* published has been stolen from different articles on our blog and website.

For example, the image on the stolen article (see below) does not reflect the information in it. The image, in fact, was about how to Calculate GPA. Whereas the content is about Grade 12 Selection Lists.

The years have been changed, but completely misrepresented the original articles, though we had the original articles published under logical times, different headings and clear instructions.

This is an important article with Grade 12 historical data that we compiled over the years. As such, we know when to update the articles and present them in a timely manner. We plan to update the data in the article for 2020 using the official DHERST selection lists.

There are key articles on our blog and website that we update to reflect the changes and documents released by DHERST and NDoE.

Again, we ask our readers to refrain from visiting any foreign website that has duplicated content. It can be misleading and misdirected towards PNG readers.

What the person copying Our content and Image should do

The better thing that a foreign website could do is to use:

  • proper attribution (without links to the article, but a mention of where the content originated from),
  • disclaimer (state a brief of where the content/article is taken from and provide link/s to the original article).
Doing one of the above acknowledgements will guide readers to the right page so that all (readers, original content producers and content-scrappers) benefit.

Sadly, this website deleted all our internal links. There was no acknowledgement of our work. As mentioned, their motive is ulterior and does not aim to inform and help readers.

2022 selected students on tertiary scholarships

Last year DHERST (Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology) published the Grade 12 Selection List on the 18th of December.

The selected students were awarded a government’s scholarship under two categories. The PNG government’s higher education scholarship is called TESAS (the Tertiary Education Scholarship Assistant Scheme).

TESAS is classed into either HECAS (the High Education Contribution Assistance Scheme) and AES (the Academic Excellence Scholarship). If a student is not awarded one of the government’s scholarships, then the student is considered Self-sponsored. The numbers of students awarded each scholarship in 2022 are given below.

Fact file Grade 12 students selection stats

2021 for 2022 ACADEMIC YEAR

DHERST announced 3 points that selected students to Tertiary institutions should take note of.

In a press release, the department of higher education said the students whose names appeared on the Grade 12 selection list must take note the following:

(1) Your personal details contained within your application has been forwarded to the Higher Education Institution which has selected you.

( 2) You should expect to receive an admissions offer letter directly from your Higher Education Institution (HEI). The HEI will communicate directly with you to inform you on specific details.

( 3) If your Study Program receives scholarship awards from the National Government, you may be eligible for financial support through the Tertiary Education Student Assistance Scheme (TESAS). Your TESAS status is also indicated in this National Selection List. Please log in to the NOAS (apply.dherst.gov.pg) and check MyStatus section any time before the 22nd December 2018 for further details on how to access your scholarship. [DHERST, Press Release 2022]

2022 tertiary selection list pdf

It can be fiddly to identify a student’s name of the PDF selection listing. But, you can use a quick trick to solve this problem. Simply use the ‘search’ bar on the PDF list.

The students’ names are not on the selection list last year. Presumably, if it is the same this year, students can not use their names when searching. The best detail to use is the student’s number on School Leaver’s Form (SLF).

How to quickly find a selected student on 2022 tertiary selection pdf list

1. Download the PDF file onto your device

2. Use the search button

3. Type in student’s SLF number

4. Search

5. Confirm the school against SLF #.

6. Confirm your scholarship/fee status.

2023 DHERST NOAS Online Application Information for Grade12 Students

The new DHERST 2023 School Leaver Application System makes it easier for Grade 12 students to choose the right tertiary institution. It clearly highlights ineligible options, eliminating the risk of making mistakes. Additionally, students can select up to five choices, increasing their chances of getting accepted.

2024 DHERST NOAS Online Application Grade 12 https //apply.dherst.gov.pg login

National Online Application  System (NOAS)

The new online school leaver application system (NOAS) gives you more choices and lets you change your choices as many times as you want. This is a big improvement over the old system, which only let you make three choices and didn't let you change them after you submitted the form.

To make the most of the NOAS, do your research carefully and choose five institutions that are a good fit for you.

Then, check the NOAS regularly to see which institutions are offering your desired courses. Finally, seek advice from your teachers, parents/guardians and patrons to make sure your choices are the best possible.

2023 Grace Period - Why it is important

The Grace Period lasts only 4 days. This is the time when you 'fine-tune' your choices. This is the easy part because DHERST should indicate to you on NOAS whether you are eligible for selection or not depending on your examination marks.

Here is what DHERST say about why the Grace Period is important:

''This [Grace Period] is a crucial period where you will start making your choices based on your final grade 12 results hence make sure to access your account during the mentioned dates. If you see the red highlight indicated in any of your five choices under “My Choices”, this means that your final result has not met the minimum program requirement set by the institution. Therefore, you must change the red highlighted choice to a different program that is available in your program list.'' DHERST

In 2022, the Grade 12 students in the country had between Tuesday 13th December and Friday 16th December to adjust their choices to the more suitable ones. DHERST did NOT grant access after the due date for making any further changes. By then, the Grade 12 students in the country have known their exam results. They were in a better position to adjust their choice in the NOAS - you can also do the same this year.

Launching of DHERST 2024 selection lists for universities and non-universities often comes out on the following week, usually on Tuesday or Wednesday, that is how quick it is.

Check this space for any latest on the Grade 12 Grace Period and the launching of 2024 selection lists.

Launching of 2023 selection for the 2024 academic year

The online selection via DHERST's National Online Selections System (NOSS) will kick in and do the magic in 35 seconds

In 2021, DHERST planned to launch the selections for the academic year on Tuesday 21 December. However, there were administrative issues that prompted the Department of Higher Education to re-call, update and republish the selection listing.

In 2022, DHERST released the non-school leavers selection lists for some institutions before the school leavers selection. All the institutions did not submit their NSL selection list to DHERST at the same time which is the cause of the delay.

So if all goes to plan, students (both non-school leavers and school leavers) are likely to see their selection status by the date announced by DHERST - see this article for the launching of the 2023 DHERST acceptance list for more info.

The Grade 12 selection for tertiary institutions in PNG, usually, comes out during the last week of December or the first week of January of the new year as seen in the last two years.

However, there were administrative problems with the Grade 12 selections in 2020, 2021 and 2022. The problems were fixed and the selection lists were updated and released to the public.

We hope the that 2024 Grade 12 selection list will flow smoothly according to the schedule released by DHERST.

Here is what DHERST said about the updated Grade 12 selections listing for tertiary institutions in 2020 which was retracted:

The Department of Higher Education Research Science & Technology (DHERST) wishes to advise students and higher education institutions (HEIs) that it has revised the previous TESAS awards for continuing students for new academic year. The award list published on the DHERST website on the 5th of January 2020 is retracted due to some technical problems beyond our control. This has been rectified and scholarships rewarded to all eligible students. (DHERST Press release | 19/01/2020)

NOTE: This is an update that we brought to our readers last year - we will bring the same update on the 2024 Grade 12 selections list for universities and non-universities. Visit the links above for the latest information for this year.

  • #4 Notes on 2021 Continuing Students TESAS Awards List, why many students' names are not on the list published by DHERST.
  • #3 For the status updates of PNG universities' acceptance list, click here.
  • #2 DHERST has not released the 2021 School Leavers TESAS award list for HEIs. It is not clear why, but we believe the HEIs sent the Students' Acceptance Letters out already.
  • #1 As predicted in an earlier video (at the end of this article), DHERST has announced that the Tertiary Selection List will be released on Friday the 8th of January.
