PNG Teachers' Pay Compared to Pacific Island Countries

Teachers play a vital role in shaping the future of any country. They are responsible for imparting knowledge and skills to students, which will help them become successful in their chosen careers. However, despite the importance of their role, many teachers in Papua New Guinea (PNG) are paid a low salary compared to their counterparts in other countries.

In this article, we will examine the salaries of PNG teachers and compare them with those of teachers in other countries. We will also explore what the PNG government can do to reward teachers properly.

How much an average high school teacher in PNG earns

According to the website payscale.com, the average high school teacher in PNG earns between K21,955 and K33,639 per year, depending on their experience and position.

This is a significantly lower salary compared to teachers in other countries. For instance, in New Zealand, the average salary for a high school teacher is $52,000 (K113,570), while in the United Kingdom, it is £28,000 (K120,900). In Canada, high school teachers earn an average salary of $61,700 (K158,421) per year.

  • See the last pay increments for teachers here.

Factors impacting salaries of teachers in PNG

The low salaries of teachers in PNG can be attributed to various factors, including the country's economic situation and the government's budget allocation for education.

According to the World Bank, PNG has a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita of $2,590 (K5,623) as of 2020. This is lower than the GDP per capita of other countries in the Pacific region, such as:

  • Fiji ($5,791),
  • Vanuatu ($3,478),
  • New Caledonia ($43,129), and
  • New Zealand ($43,547).
As a result, the government have limited resources to allocate to education, especially teachers' salaries, leading to low salaries for teachers.

PNG government's budget allocation for education

Furthermore, the PNG government's budget allocation for education is relatively low compared to other countries in the region. (Note that this looks at the main education budget, excluding the Tuition Fee Free Education Funds)

According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in 2019, the government allocated 3.1% of its GDP to education. This is lower than the allocation of other Pacific Island countries, such as

  • Solomon Islands (6.7%),
  • Fiji (5.2%), Vanuatu (4.9%), and
  • New Zealand (6.0%).
A higher allocation of the budget to education could result in better salaries for teachers, among other improvements.

What can the PNG government do?

To reward teachers properly, the PNG government can take various steps, including:

  • increasing the budget allocation for education,
  • providing incentives for teachers, and
  • improving the quality of education.

A higher budget allocation for education could result in increased salaries for teachers, which can attract and retain qualified teachers in the profession.

Providing incentives, such as performance-based pay, can motivate teachers to perform better, resulting in better learning outcomes for students.

Improving the quality of education can also lead to better salaries for teachers. When students perform better in national and international assessments, it reflects positively on the quality of education provided by the country.

The government can improve the quality of education by investing in teacher training, providing resources for schools, and improving the curriculum.

PNG Teachers' Pay Compared to Pacific Island Countries

The salaries of teachers in PNG are lower compared to those in other countries, and this can be attributed to various factors, including the country's economic situation and the government's budget allocation for education.

To reward teachers properly, the government can attract and retain qualified teachers in the profession, resulting in better learning outcomes for students and a brighter future for the country.

In summary, it is clear that the salaries of teachers in Papua New Guinea are comparatively low when compared to those in other Pacific Island countries, such as New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, Vanuatu, and Solomon Islands.

However, the government can take steps to reward teachers properly, including increasing the budget allocation for education, providing incentives for teachers, and improving the quality of education.

It is essential for the government to recognize the important role that teachers play in shaping the future of the country and to ensure that they are adequately compensated for their work.

The PNG Exam Results website is an online platform for checking the Grade 10 and Grade 12 provisional exam marks. It also has the capability for MDS data officers and provincial exam coordinators can input data into the system - but these functions have not been fully utilised at present.

The online results website started in 2018. This year will be the 5th year running.

In brief, exam data sheets enter the MSD office after marking Grade 10 and Grade 12 exams and also from the schools in the country. The Students' Data from the internal school-based assessments and external examinations are manually entered, checked, re-checked and finalised for the final Grade 10 and Grade 12 results.

It is intensive work that the MSD officers and schools do to ensure all the marks, grades and certificates are ready.

My PNG Exam Result Website (www.mypngexamresults.com)

An external developer controls the backhand of the Exam Results website. They upload the Grade 10 and Grade 12 students' examination data files to the website. This happens after MSD's checks and balances. It is the final step before the students can check their results online.

MSD does most of the work as it is its responsibility.

Notably, the website's URL does not have .gov.pg like the NDoE website (www.education.gov.pg) and other government departments do.

As mentioned, the platform belongs to the NDoE and houses the Grade 12 and Grade 10 examination data. But, hosted on a different WEB-HOST and URL.

It is a matter for the education department to localise the HOST and URL. Hence, localising the students' data.

Asian Development Bank Funds TVET Schools in PNG

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is providing K174 million worth of support to improve the Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sub-sector in Papua New Guinea.

Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST) Secretary Dr Francis Hualupmomi told The National that 10 out of the 22 TVET institutes recognised by the department would be benefiting from the total of K233 million TVET for an employment project.

“After we sign today (yesterday), funding will be released as soon as the accounts are open next year after March,” he said.

He pointed out that DHERST would be the implementing agency of the funding, with the PNG Government putting up US$6.3 million (K21 million), the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade US10 million (K34 million) and a concessional loan of US$50 million (K174 million) from ADB.

The 10 colleges earmarked to benefit from the project are:

  1. Port Moresby Technical College,
  2. Bougainville Technical College,
  3. Madang Technical College,
  4. Mt Hagen Technical College,
  5. Highlands Agricultural College,
  6. Goroka Technical College,
  7. PNG National Polytechnic Institute,
  8. West New Britain Technical College,
  9. Western Province Technical College and
  10.  Don Bosco Simbu Technical College.

“They were selected through the external market assessment conducted by ADB. They did their own assessment and then selected those 10 colleges and they will eventually become polytechnic institutions,” Hualupmomi said.

The specific focus of the project will be on investing in the upskilling of construction and agriculture skills.

This was in line with the government’s priority goals of the Medium Term Development Plans IV to ensure that all school leavers were educated and trained under the ‘No Child Left Behind’ policy.

Why is a Website and Social Media Great Business Tools?

The article aims to help small businesses and start-ups improve online sales and marketing of their products and services. You'll find out how easy it can be for *new* businesses to create a business website and use 5 useful tools to make the website stand out above the rest.

Write articles to rank on Google

A 600 – 800 word post is just right to get a good Google ranking. You may not need plenty of mobile phone *data* or 24-7 WiFi to publish your work. Write offline (using Microsoft Word for example) and post when you are online.

So if you have not started your start-up/business website, take a look at how easy it is to create a website.

(Here is how I started PNG Insight from scratch - learn about how to get a suitable URL, Host and run a successful business website.)

5 useful tools to make your business website standout

Here are the 5 online tools that will make your blog stand out from the others.

1. Grammarly

Grammarly valuable tool for Spelling & Grammar Checks.

Grammarly is a useful online grammar and spelling checker. Just copy and paste your final assignment or blog post into the window pane and click Check Your Text.

Obliviously, English is the second (even third) language for many Papua New Guineans. Grammarly, the Grammar and Spelling checker tool, is one blogging tool I'd recommend highly, even if you are a savvy writer, you will also benefit from it.

Make sure you have used the correct English version by choosing English (US) or English (UK), or whichever one you prefer. Grammarly 'spelling check' is free on Chrome, Safari, and Firefox browsers.

You can install the app as an add-on on Chrome or use the online version to check your work for both Grammar and Spelling errors.

2. Use Social Media Platforms (prioritise YouTube, LinkedIn, Pinterest)

It is important to create social media accounts for your business website. Social media is the most important platform for reaching customers without spending money on paid advertisements.

Here is why you should prioritise YouTube, LinkedIn and Pinterest

My top picks (in the order of getting organic search customers)  are YouTube, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Twitter and Facebook. The first three social media platforms (YouTube, LinkedIn, Pinterest) are proven organic (Google) search drivers for your business, in addition to your website. Also called the evergreen online platforms. One article (like this one) will rank for years to come.

Twitter and Facebook are simply message-sharing platforms with no (or very little) organic search ranking. They can be used when there is a need to get a recent ad/message out en masse.

If you are planning to use images, try Pinterest. In fact, Pinterest is a useful tool for showcasing your work as well as getting visitors to your business.

Another way to find the ideal social media platform fit for your website is to experiment with various platforms. This can take years to find social media platform that complements your business website, once you find it, stick with it.

3. Images/visuals and messages

Attractive visuals and powerful messages are best for your business website. Think of it this way:

  • images attract readers, and
  • messages give the readers a taste of what the post is about.

So, make the images appealing to attract readers and messages stimulating so that the readers will want to read further.

You can do all these without spending money on image apps.  For beginners, the two free image editors I have been using are Canvas and IShot. You can auto-edit photos, add texts, use free photos and do many other formatting styles.

These two image apps are also available on Google Play Store for free.

Many of the photos on PNG Insight are examples of what you can do with an image editor like Canvas and IShot.

My top tip is to always keep your photos the *same size*. Consistency is the key to making your business website stand out amongst the others.

4. Google Search Console & Google Analytics

Google Search Console can help optimise your website. GSC is, in simple terms, the platform where you tell Google about your website by creating sitemaps and submitting URLs, inviting Google to come to your website. It should be the first step of a structured SEO plan, why buy expensive SEO plans when Google has this tool you need for free?

On the other hand, Google Analytics is the platform where Google provides you (the webmaster) with data and information about your website. That means that Google has recognised your website - its structure (sitemap) and individual URL.

So, if you want to understand how your website works (and improve its performance) you’ve got to use both platforms provided by Google – and they are free!

Google Search Console (GSC) and Google Analytics (GA) provide insights into the performance of your business website.

Moreso, these two are powerful data insights Google provides free of charge. It can never get better than this when you are looking for Search Insights and how customers behave on your business website.

Google Analytics analytics .google .com Understand your traffic sources, patterns and conversion rates in real-time.

5. Google Trends and Adwords Keyword Search

Rank well on Google - visibility!

This is the important part of writing that many beginners ignore or did not know about. If you want to rank well in Google’s searches, you must learn to identify (and use the keyword in a post) what you want Google to rank you for

It’s not rocket science!

You just have to identify what is trending on Google and used Adword Keyword Search to choose a keyword. Then, use the keyword in your writing (and also in the post’s search description before publishing it).

It is the anchor text that Google shows to people in search results when the search matches your keyword.

Why are a Website and Social Media Great Business Tools?

All in all, these may seem like a mountain of work to do. It, probably, is.

But having a business website that puts your products and services on the front page of Google searches can never get better. is fun and easy if you do it right from the start.

All small business owners and start-ups have to know that having a powerful website is the key to sales and marketing; and the overall success of selling online.
