2026 Grade 11 Selection List PNG National High and Secondary Schools

The Grade 11 selection list for 2026 is usually released by the General Education Services (GES) of the National Education Department before the end of the year, mid-December. Perhaps it is important to understand the effort (and appreciate the time-bound work) the education officials put into selecting the Grade 11 students.

In this article, we provide information and updates on Grade 11 selections and the Selection List based on what we observed in the past.

Timebound Activity: Grade 11 Selection Release Date

The selection is time-bound. As mentioned, though parents and stakeholders are desperate to see the list, we must also know that the list will (still) come out before the end of the year. No need to be worried.

Take a look at the past release dates. This will give you an idea about when the Grade 11 selection list will come out this year.

    Grade 11 Selections for 2026

Here is a brief of how the grade 11 selection takes place, starting with the students taking the exams until the release of the Grade 11 selection list in PDF.

The 6 pointers will help you to understand the selection process as you await the list to come out this year - see the link below for the latest update on PNG Insight:

    • 1. Grade 10 Exams taken by students in schools in the provinces.
    • 2. Grade 10 Students' scripts are marked in the provinces.
    • 3. Results are sent from the provincial marking centres to the Education Department in Port Moresby (MSD deals with the online Grade 10 results/marks).
    • 4. MSD and General Education Services (a section of the National Department of Education) facilitate the selection.
    • 5. Provincial reps, principals and education officers meet in the provinces and use the Grade 10 students' final results to select the 2024 Grade 11 students for national and secondary schools in the country.
    • 6. The 2024 Grade 11 students selection PDF lists are published on the education department website.

A recent article on Grade 10 results and Grade 11 selection is available here.

How long does it take to do Grade 11 selection?

In 2020, it took 10 days (from the end of the selection) for the GES to publish the Grade 11 selection list. It took longer in 2021 (3 weeks) to finalise the publishing of the selection list in PDF.

In 2022, the exam results came out 2 days early - this was because the selection was computerised and done online. PNG Insight expects the 2025 Grade 11 selection for the 2026 academic year to take place within a week and finalised the published thereafter. Here is the latest articleRead about it.

This may seem long for the waiting parents and stakeholders, but it is important to get it right and also for the education secretary to see the selection listing.

Therefore, though it is a time-bound selection, GES and the education department do it well in 10 days after selections have been made.

Teaching Credential Programs in Carlifonia - Becoming a Teacher

Becoming a Teacher: The most common path to becoming a teacher is to study a 4-year Bachelor's of Education (BEd) program at a college or university. However, teaching credential programs (also called the Post-Graduate Diploma in Education, PDGE) are a pathway for those who have a different first degree and want to train to become teachers.

    Types of Teaching Credential Programs

    California credential teaching program

The teaching credential programs are offered in elementary, primary and high school education. It depends on individual choice. The programs allow the students to receive support from the colleges and universities while they are working or pursuing a new career path.

Those who want to train to be teachers can choose one of the following credential programs:

    • Single Subject Credential program
    • Multiple Subject Credential program
    • Education Specialist Credential program

    Online Teaching Credential Programs

Students have a choice to pursue an online teaching credential program or an on-campus program. The program advisors at the colleges and universities can help.

Most states in the US, and especially California, require at least two years of full-time study and on-campus lectures. The program also requires a supervised internship at a local school for up to 6 weeks.

If you are going to study online, always make this clear during the interview. Ask the interviewer about the lectures, assessments, and online contact hours that are expected of you as an online student. And importantly, ask about how you will do your internship at the end of your online teaching credential program.

    Three Credential Programs in California

Single Subject Credential program: This program prepares the students to teach a specific subject. The student-teachers are trained to become specialist subject teachers. They teach small groups of students such as those in most middle schools and high schools.

Multiple Subject Credential program: This program is for students who want to become kindergarten or elementary school teachers.

Education Specialist Credential program: This program prepares participants to teach young children, youth and adults with disabilities from elementary to primary and high school including those that are age 22 years old.

    Teaching Credential Programs Interview Questions

Here are 6 common questions that interviewers often ask during the Credential Programs Interview. Many of those interviews who shared their experiences say that it is important to 'speak from the heart'. Listens attentively and answer the questions clearly and honestly.

    • What are your strengths?
    • What does social justice mean to you?
    • Why do you want to become a teacher?
    • How do you approach difficult situations?
    • What do you hope to contribute to the teaching profession?
    • How do you communicate with students, parents, and staff?

Do not hesitate to ask questions. Especially, at the end of the interview when you are given the chance to ask any question.

Mention that you are passionate about teaching and helping children and disadvantaged adults. Also, ask what kind of help you will need to complete the program.

Hope these quick tips help. Please, do leave a comment and let us know what you think about the Teaching Credential Programs

FODE COURSES IN PROVINCES MEET EDUCATION NEEDS: PM

Prime Minister Hon. James Marape,  has urged Provincial Administrators (PAs)  who attended a two-day workshop on Public Sector Reforms and Cost Control in Port Moresby to take the Flexible Open and Distance Education (FODE) policy of Government back to schools in their respective provinces.

2022 FODE application form PDF download

RECOMMENDED: Flexible Open and Distance Education (FODE) Enrolment

Mr  Marape made the call at the closing of the workshop, held from 19 – 20  October at APEC Haus. He told the PAs that they are very important assets in the Government’s push to provide effective services to the majority of the people who lived in rural areas.

“You are very important people out there, who are in touch with over 80 percent of our citizens.

“I would like to make two tasks for you to take back and work with your provincial administrations.

“Next year and onwards, we want to roll out to the rest of the country, especially in our high schools, the Flexible Open and Distance Education (FODE) courses and course materials.

“Provincial Administrators, take note of this:  Go back, work with your Provincial Education Advisors to make high schools become venues for FODE as well.”

Every year, about 10, 000 school-aged children dropped out of the formal education system and parents were unable to empower them to seek further education outside of the formal system.

He said as a Government, the Marape/Basil Government would like to expand FODE in a big way to cater for the educational needs of this particular group of young Papua New Guineans.

Mr  Marape urged the PAs present to make their high schools focal points for FODE delivery.

“Through  FODE, school-aged children who dropped out of the formal system would still get education right at home, without having to spend to come to the urban areas for education.

“They will also be able to sit for National Examinations with students who go through the formal system to go into colleges,” he added.

The Government is also considering introducing entrepreneurship courses through FODE to encourage them to go into Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

How to prepare for an exam

The ‘how-to revise for an exam’ tips focuses on preparing for an exam as an important first step to effective study. Understandably, if you do not gather the right revision materials before an exam, you’ll have problems revising the fundamental facts your need to answer a certain exam question.

It is like building a house. The housebuilder must/should:

      • have a plan (List of topics),
      • collect the right materials s/he needs,
      • know when to use the materials (timetable), and
      • build the house (organise notes by subject for revision).

You will not (and CANNOT) go wrong if you prepare the materials in good time, make your revision notes and use them effectively when you are studying for an examination.

Take a look at the full article about how to prepare (and revise) for an exam and aced it with flying colours.

      Download Exam Planner (Study Timetable)

If you are in Grade 12, 10 or 8 and preparing for your final exam, you'll find the exam week planner useful. Check out these study guides and download the exam planner.

The Papua New Guinea University of Technology Ranked No 1 in PNG

The Papua New Guinea University of Technology (Unitech, Lae) has been ranked the best university amongst six (6) Papua New Guinea universities according to UniRank. UniRank is an international higher education directory that reviews accredited universities and colleges in the world.

      PNG Universities rank 2021

For the University, this is great news since it used to be third and second-best in the last couple of years but made its way to number one in August 2020.

With the current ranking, PNG University ranks are as follow:

      1. University of Technology
      2. Divine Word University,
      3. The University of PNG,
      4. The University of Goroka,
      5. Pacific Adventist University and
      6. PNG University of Natural Resources and Environment.

      The six universities are ranked based on the criteria that the university is;

      • being chartered,
      • licensed or
      • accredited by the appropriate Papua New Guinean higher education-related organization, offering at least four-year undergraduate degrees (bachelor degrees) or postgraduate degrees (master or doctoral degrees) and delivering courses predominantly in a traditional, face-to-face, non-distance education format.

According to the UniRank website, it aims to provide a non-academic comparison of achievements or merits by the higher learning institutions based on valid, unbiased and non-influenceable web metrics provided by independent web intelligence sources rather than data submitted by the Universities themselves.

PNG Unitech is also ranked first in the top universities on the Facebook category on UniRank with the most likes at 12, 798 (August statistics) followed by Divine Word University (8,753), Pacific Adventist University (8,462), PNG University of Natural Resources and Environment (7,039), University of Papua New Guinea (5,458) and University of Goroka (5,061).

Mathematics Exam Resources Website for PNG students and teachers

Your initiative (Mathematics Examination Resources website) is welcomed as an approach students can prepare themselves well ahead of examinations.

Consequently, the issues and challenges are briefly discussed to deepen members of the public perceptions of the examination papers, examination, teaching and learning, school curriculum, memorisation and thinking strategies.

Readers' note: The comments are by/from the former PNG Education Department Secretary Dr Michael Tapo in response to the new initiative we spearheaded - making online resources for teachers and students. We thank Dr Tapo for reaching out and for the comments below.
The math resource website is called Mathematics Examination Resources (MER). Here is why (The Reason) we created this Maths resource website. Take a look and let us know what you think.

An in-depth article from Dr Tapo was published on the PNG Insight parent website titled 'Thinking Strategies' Help Students Solve Problems' - read here.

      Immediate challenges in educational approaches

Central to all of the approaches taken, the century-long learning phenomenon of Thinking versus Memorising of facts in the late 1960s -1980s is worth revisiting. Approaches such as:

      • students were routinised memorising of facts, and
      • learn to remember and then display this in Grade 6, Grade 8, and Grade 10 examinations.
When they fail to understand the examination questions and cannot remember the facts they fail to meet the achievement level for high school or tertiary and university education.

      Problem Solving and Thinking Strategies

School education examination in Papua New Guinea (PNG) from 1975 to 2020 and beyond is all about Knowledge Gathering and Remembering and is significant and very much dependent on the quantity of teaching, quality of teaching, and teacher quality.

The problem has been and continues to be so and is an urgent and acute problem associated very much to Problem Solving or best described as Thinking.

Almost all high and secondary school education in Papua New Guinea failed to focus Problem Solving Strategies. And have limited teaching and learning strategies that address the scientific approach (of teaching thinking strategies) required to solve problems.  Hence, its an apparent strategy and definite means to know the facts from knowledge and skills taught and learned in primary, high and secondary examinations.

We know revising for exams is important because it helps to stop anxiety and stress. We created a Maths website where you can download Grade 8, Grade 10 and Grade 12 General Maths and Advanced Maths Exam Papers. GET THEM HERE.

      Importance of teaching the syllabus

The amount of time spent in teaching and learning mathematics, Science and Grammar is interconnected to the number of multiple practices each child assumes in class in these subjects is significant to avoiding dependency on past and recent examination papers.

The current culture of schooling and learning is dependent on schools and teachers must teach children more and make them work harder to increase their information on the level of knowledge and skills planned around the subject learning being learned.

Foremost, the level of individual child intelligence and termly achievements in a subject learning area must be corrected with the facts (knowledge and skills acquisition). Students primarily learn best if they can remember these facts.

      Knowledge and skills being examined

The ambiguity of language and phrases used in the past and more recent examination papers indicate the facts of knowledge and skills being examined can or could lead to confusion.

Some questions can mislead students to select or choose to answer a question in future examinations because of a similar question and answer from the past examination papers and likely answer that is expected in the 2020 or 2021 examination papers.

The quest for high and secondary examinations is placing more emphasis on the thinking strategies which lead children to creativity, problem-solving, inquiry, and critical approach to thinking in a subject learning area being learned.

      Expectations and clarity of examinations

Papua New Guinea children in the 21st Century must be encouraged and have a voice in determining what is taught in the National Curriculum, what is examined and the rules applied to assessing and measuring of facts in knowledge and skills in examinations.

Quality of teaching and teacher quality needs major shifts towards thinking strategies and say goodbye to the current heavily dependent ideology of the 'chalk-talk and certainty principle which is central to the there is a right and wrong answer to every question!

UNITECH and UoG Yearly STAT-P Test - Is it Necessary?

The PNG University of Technology (UNITECH) and the University of Goroka (UoG) are the only tertiary institutions running the Special Tertiary Admission Test (STAT) where candidates must book and pay a fee of K100 to sit the test.

The two universities WILL ONLY CONSIDER grade 12 school leavers who sit the test.

      1. Grade 12 School Leavers (SLs) 2020

The PNG University of Technology (UOT) will only consider applications of Grade 12 School Leavers (SLs) who sit the STAT P test in November 2020.

      2. Grade 12 School Leavers (SLs) 2020 and Pre-Service Non-School Leavers

The University of Goroka (UOG) will only consider applications of Grade 12 School Leavers (SLs) and Pre-Service Non-School Leavers who sit the STAT P test in November 2020.

Here are some points/questions I have for discussion.

      •  Is this STAT-P mandatory? If so, why is it that other tertiary institutions are not conducting it?
      • If a very bright straight-A student does not sit this test, will he or she be denied a space because he/she did not sit the test?
      • On the other extreme, how about all the applicants to these two universities who sit the test but miss out on selection. What is the justification for collecting their K100 fess?
      • How will these two universities reach all secondary schools in the country, those in very remote schools, how will such students sit this expensive test?
      • Can the two universities (UNITECH and UoG) explain to the public about the importance of this test and how it will benefit these students over students in other institutions whose students don’t sit the test?
      • Is there any good reason why the government should not intervene in this expensive and unfair activity?
