How Many Languages are Spoken in the World?

Languages are an integral part of human culture and communication, serving as a means to express thoughts, ideas, and emotions. Throughout history, humans have developed thousands of languages, each unique in its structure, vocabulary, and grammar.

But how many languages are spoken in the world? Let's explore this linguistic diversity and compare it to the number of languages spoken in Papua New Guinea (PNG), a country known for its remarkable language diversity.

The World's Linguistic Landscape

The exact number of languages spoken in the world is difficult to determine due to various factors such as dialects, regional variations, and the evolving nature of languages.

However, according to Ethnologue, a widely recognized database of world languages, there are approximately 7,000 languages spoken in the world today.

These languages are distributed across different regions, continents, and countries, reflecting the rich linguistic diversity of our planet.

Languages in Papua New Guinea (PNG)

Papua New Guinea is renowned for its linguistic diversity. With a population of around 9 million people, PNG is home to an astonishing number of languages.

It is estimated that there are over 850 languages spoken in PNG, making it one of the most linguistically diverse countries in the world.

This remarkable linguistic diversity is attributed to the country's unique geography, with its rugged terrain and isolated communities leading to the development of distinct languages over time.

Comparison with Other Countries

To put the linguistic diversity of PNG into perspective, let's compare it with the number of languages spoken in other countries.

How many languages are spoken in Australia?

Australia, a neighbouring country of Papua New Guinea, also has a diverse linguistic landscape.

However, in contrast to PNG, the number of languages spoken in Australia is relatively small.

According to Ethnologue, there are 250 indigenous languages as well and around 400 languages spoken in Australia, reflecting the impact of colonization and assimilation policies on indigenous languages, and immigration.

How many languages are spoken in India?

India, one of the world's most populous countries, is known for its linguistic diversity as well. According to India's education ministry, it is estimated that there are 398 languages, including 387 living and 11 extinct languages, spoken in India,

However, a small number of major languages, such as Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, and Marathi, are spoken by a significant portion of the population.

Conclusion

Languages are an invaluable part of our cultural heritage, reflecting the diversity and richness of human expression.

While the exact number of languages spoken in the world is difficult to ascertain, Papua New Guinea stands out as a unique example of linguistic diversity with over 850 languages spoken in the country.

What is the highest GPA you can get in high school weighted?

The highest GPA that a student can achieve in high school is a 4.0. This is considered the perfect GPA and is the standard used by most schools to measure a student's academic performance. However, some schools use a weighted system, which allows for a higher GPA.

GPA - high school weighted

In a weighted system, certain classes are given extra points or "weight" in the calculation of a student's GPA. These classes are typically more challenging or advanced, such as honours or Advanced Placement (AP) classes. For example, an A in an honours class may be worth 5 points, while an A in a regular class may be worth 4 points.

With a weighted system, the highest possible GPA is 5.0. This is because the extra points earned in the weighted classes can push a student's GPA above 4.0. However, it is important to note that this is a rare achievement and requires a significant amount of hard work and dedication.

GPA - high school unweighted

It's worth noting that not all schools use weighted GPAs. Some use the traditional unweighted system, while others use a hybrid system that combines both weighted and unweighted classes. It's crucial for students and parents to understand the system used by their school, so they can set appropriate goals and understand how their grades are being calculated.

High School GPA

All in all, the highest GPA a student can achieve in high school is a 4.0 in an unweighted system, but in a weighted system, it can be as high as 5.0. This is an excellent achievement and requires students to work hard in challenging classes.

Understanding the system used by the school is important to set appropriate goals and understand how grades are being calculated.

Balob Teachers College Application Form 2026

How to apply to  Balob Teachers College?

There are two ways to apply to Balob Teachers College: as a school leaver and a non-school leaver.

Apply as a non-school leaver

Balob Teachers College does not have a website or social media account where you can get information on courses, applications and selections. The college relies on the media to disseminate information to new students.

The best way to get a Balob Teachers College application form for 2026 is to get it from the college.

But, what can you do if you are not in Lae or anywhere nearby? The college often asks for proof of ID before issuing new application forms. This can be hard - here are some suggestions to help you - see below for non-school leavers' application timeframe.

Here are 5 ways to get an application form, even if you're not in LAE.

  • 1) Call a family member/friend you know personally to get it for you.
  • 2) Call the college and ask for the latest application form and fees.
  • 3) Travel there yourself to get it - this can be an expensive exercise.
  • 4) Ask a Facebook/social media friend you know to send it to you.
  • 5) Ask a current student to help you out.

The five ways above are practical ways to get the Balob Teachers College non-school leaver's application form 2026.

Apply as a school leaver (Grade 12)

Balob Teachers College option for Grade 12 students who want to become teachers.

All you have to do is to put it down as one of your options when you complete the National Online Application Form on the DHERST website.

The best tip here is to make it your first or second choice so that you have a higher chance of getting in. You can do that at school with the help of your deputy principal.

If you do not make that choice yet, do not worry. You can make adjustments to your final choice during the Grace Period DHERST gives you.
