Is Papua New Guinea Safe? Dispelling Myths and Sensationalisation

Papua New Guinea (PNG), a country known for its rich cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes, often faces negative perceptions and sensationalised media coverage regarding its safety. However, it is essential to dispel the myths and provide a balanced view of the safety situation in PNG.

Is Papua New Guinea Safe to travel to, live and work? We take a look at the common sense approach to living in PNG

Understanding the Realities of Safety in PNG

Like any other country, PNG has its share of challenges when it comes to safety. Crime rates, including petty theft and armed robbery, can be higher in some areas, especially in urban centres.

However, it is crucial to note that these incidents are localised, where population and unemployment are high, and not prevalent across the entire country.

Is Papua New Guinea Safe?

(PNG is one of the best surfing hotspots in the Pacific. Check out this article for Surfing Papua New Guinea)

The Importance of Context

When discussing safety in PNG, it is essential to consider the context. PNG is a diverse country with over 800 different languages spoken, and each region has its unique set of challenges.

Some remote areas with limited infrastructure and access to services may have different safety concerns compared to major cities. For example, visiting Kiriwina Island and enjoying the freedom there is not the same as Port Moresby where you need to take common-sense precautions.

It is vital to research and understands the specific safety situation of the area you plan to visit and take appropriate precautions.

Tourist-Friendly Destinations

PNG has several tourist-friendly destinations that are considered safe for travellers.

Popular tourist spots such as Port Moresby, the capital city, and other major cities like Lae, Madang, and Goroka, have established tourist infrastructure with hotels, restaurants, and tour operators that cater to international visitors.

These areas generally have a visible police presence, and many tourists visit these places without any safety issues.

Is Port Moresby Safe?

The Warm Hospitality of the People

One of the most significant aspects of PNG is its people. The locals are known for their warm hospitality and welcoming nature towards visitors.

The majority of the people in PNG are friendly and helpful, and take pride in their culture.

Interacting with the locals can be a rewarding experience that adds to the charm of travelling in PNG.

Common Sense Precautions

Like travelling to any foreign country, exercising common sense precautions can enhance your safety in PNG. Some practical tips include:

  • Researching and following the local customs, traditions, and laws.
  • Using reputable tour operators and accommodations.
  • Avoiding remote areas without proper guidance.
  • Avoiding flashy jewellery and valuables in public.
  • Using registered taxis or private transportation.
  • Being aware of your surroundings and keeping an eye on your belongings.

Importantly, follow travel advisories and guidelines issued by your home country's embassy or consulate. However, most of these diplomats and travel advisors rely on news and current events to send out travel advice, and in most cases, it may not be as worse as it is often worked out to be!

The Beauty and Diversity of Papua New Guinea

Despite the misconceptions about safety, PNG offers a unique and breathtaking travel experience.

From lush rainforests to pristine beaches, diverse wildlife, and vibrant cultural festivals, PNG has something for every adventurous traveller.

The country's natural beauty and cultural richness are worth exploring with proper research and preparation.

Conclusion ( Is Papua New Guinea Safe?)

In conclusion, PNG is a country with its set of safety challenges, like any other destination. While it is essential to acknowledge and be aware of these challenges, it is equally important to understand the context, exercise common sense precautions, and research the specific areas you plan to visit.

So, is Papua New Guinea safe? Yes, it can be, with informed travel planning and taking the necessary precautions.

ECZ Results Online 2024

Many students and parents are asking when the 2024 ECZ Grade 7 and 9 results are coming out.

In a response to this question on Facebook a week ago (see screenshot), the Examination Council of Zambia said they'll inform the public soon. However, a definite date has yet to be announced.

The best thing to do is to check the ECZ website for the latest updates and the latest on Grade 7 and 9 exam results for 2024.

How to Download ECZ e-Statement of results 2023? How to Print ECZ e-Statement of Results? How to Check ECZ results on phone (Airtel, Zamtel, 8778, 8383...)? ECZ results online 2022 Information You Should Know Marking and Final Exam Results 2022 When will ECZ results 2022 come out

Marking and Final Exam Results 2024

From the outset, two events must take place before the exam results come out. That means that the ECZ has to finalise examination results before the Ministry of General Education officially releases the results.

Marking and processing of marks are delicate work and have to be handled with care and due diligence.

Here is what is likely to happen before the 2024 Grade 12 results are released to the public:

  • Making of the Grade 12 Examinations (in progress, done by markers)
  • Processing of examination marks and students' school data (pending, done by ECZ)
  • An announcement that Grade 12 results are ready (pending, done by govt/education minister)
  • Release of Grade 12 results (after the announcement, done by ECZ)
  • Access Grade 12, 9 and 7 results (by students)

The process needs to be followed thoroughly before the final results are released online for students to access.

ECZ Online Services

This year (2024), ECZ has said that it is gradually moving towards getting some of its services online. Some of the examination and certification online services include:

  • institutional verification of results,
  • candidate registration,
  • online payment for exams, and
  • e-statements among others.

Note that the transcripts of results are to be collected from the EXAMS CENTRES. The Examination Council of Zambia (ECZ) and the Ministry of Education do not issue the transcripts of results.

We hope this article helps our visitors from Zambia who are seeking updates on Grades 7, 9, and 12 and GCE examination results and e-statements. Please, do let us know if there is any information we need to update.

All the best!

How to Apply to a PNG Teacher's College to Study in 2024

Want to become a teacher or education officer in PNG? The best pathway is through one of PNG's Teachers' Colleges, but you must have a GPA above the required threshold.

In this article, PNG insight provides brief information about the 16 teachers' colleges in PNG and how to apply as a school leaver and non-school leaver (NSL).

Update: From 2024, the Higher Education Department, Education Department and Teachers Service Commission have agreed to a HIGHER GPA than 2.4, click here to get the full information.

What is the GPA for Teachers' Colleges in PNG?

The GPA for teachers' colleges in PNG complies with the DHERST (Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology). The threshold was 2.0, but the Department of Education  (which employs and registers teachers) has raised it to 2.4, see the news article.

Also, there are two important factors that can affect your selection to a teachers' college in PNG.

  • Firstly, a threshold GPA is like the borderline - as an applicant you want to have a GPA that is higher than the threshold to increase your chance of being selected.
  • Secondly, your grades should indicate consistency. For example, your selection may be placed in a pool or disregarded if you achieve great marks in most subjects - which are likely to give you a good GPA - but your English and Literature mark is terrible.

There is more to being selected than GPA. A good GPA increases your chance of being selected, but it is not the only determining factor. There is more decision-making involved in the selection process.

GPA for Teachers College in PNG application Form PDF 2024 download

Government scholarship TESAS

Note that the government scholarship TESAS (Tertiary Education School Assistance Scheme) recommends a GPA of 2.0 or higher.

You can be on TESAS when entering a teachers' college with a GPA above the threshold, yet if you do not maintain it in your first year, you'll have to go by as a self-sponsored student.

So, it is important to get a GPA above 2.0 and perform consistently across all your subjects in Grade 12 if you want to study at a teachers' college in PNG.

How to apply to a teacher's college as a school leaver?

Applying to a teacher's college as a Grade 12 school leaver is easy. You'll have to do that at your school with the help of your teacher through the http://apply.dherst.gov.pg login portal.

Your school's deputy academic and class patron will assist you in making your choices.

A top tip here is to make teachers' college your first choice if you want to become a teacher in PNG.

How to apply to a teacher's college as a non-school leaver?

Non-school leavers are the Grade 12 students who completed school in the last five years or those who upgraded their marks at FODE and want to study at a college in PNG.

If you are an NSL, you'll have to apply directly to the college you wish to study. It will have the latest application form, school fee info and other admission details you need to know before applying.

Here is a link to help you prepare.

How to check your name in Teachers' College Selection 2024?

The DHERST selects the Grade 12 school leavers based on the choices on the online application portal. It also compiles non-school leavers selection lists for the colleges.

The teachers' college selections for 2024 will come out with the respective heading - school leavers (for the current Grade 12) and non-school leavers (for those who have completed Grade 12 in the last five years)

Also, check to make sure you are on TESAS. If you are not on TESAS, you will be a SELF-SPONSORED student.

How Many Teachers' Colleges are in PNG?

Wondered how many teachers' colleges are in PNG? There are 16 recognised teachers' colleges in the country that take in students yearly. (Note that several teachers' colleges are not recognised by the Department of Higher Education, DHERST)

Also, the colleges are located in each of the regions. Check the college that is closer to where you are.

Nursing Colleges in PNG and GPA info for Students

Want to become a health care worker in PNG? The best pathway is through one of PNG's Nursing Colleges, but you must have a GPA above the required threshold.

In this article, PNG insight provides brief information about the 12 colleges in PNG and how to apply as a school leaver and non-school leaver (NSL).

Application Nursing Colleges in PNG 2023 - 2024

What is the GPA for Nursing Colleges in PNG?

The GPA for nursing colleges in PNG complies with the DHERST (Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology). The threshold is 2.0.

But, two important factors also affect selections.

Firstly, a threshold GPA is like the borderline - as an applicant you want to have a GPA that is higher than the threshold to increase your chance of being selected.

Secondly, your grades should indicate consistency. For example, your selection may be placed in a pool or disregarded if you achieve excellent marks in most subjects - which are likely to give you a good GPA - but your English and Literature mark is terrible.

There is more to being selected than GPA. A good GPA increases your chance of being selected, but it is not the only determining factor. There is more decision-making involved in the selection process.

Read about what DHERST selections and selection pool.

Government scholarship TESAS

Note that the government scholarship TESAS (Tertiary Education School Assistance Scheme) recommends a GPA of 2.0 or higher.

You can be on TESAS when entering a nursing college with a GPA above the threshold, yet if you do not maintain it in your first year, you'll have to go by as a self-sponsored student.

So, it is important to get a GPA above 2.0 and perform consistently across all your subject in Grade 12 if you want to study at a nursing college in PNG.

Securing a scholarship from the Australian Awards requires a GPA of 2.75 for Grade 12 non-school leavers and 3.0 for students who come through matriculation at DODL/DODE.

The Australian Awards offer scholarships for PNG students to study at the Lae School of Nursing and Lutheran School of Nursing. Check out this information page.

How to apply to nursing college as a school leaver?

Applying to a nursing college as a Grade 12 school leaver is easy. You'll have to do that at your school with the help of your teacher through the http://apply.dherst.gov.pg login portal.

Your school's deputy academic and class patron will assist you to make your choices.

A top tip here is to make Nursing College your first choice if you want to become a healthcare worker in PNG.

How to apply to nursing school as a non-school leaver?

Non-school leavers are the Grade 12 students who completed school in the last five years or those who upgraded their marks at FODE and want to study at a Nursing college in PNG.

If you are an NSL, you'll have to apply directly to the school of nursing you wish to study. It will have the latest application form, school fee info and other admission details you need to know before applying.

Here is a link to help you prepare.

How to check your name in Nursing College Selection 2024?

The DHERST selects the Grade 12 school leavers based on the choices on the online application portal. It also compiles non-school leavers selection lists for the nursing colleges.

The nursing school/nursing colleges selections for 2024 will come out with the respective heading - school leavers (for the current Grade 12) and non-school leavers (for those who have completed Grade 12 in the last five years)

Also, check to make sure you are on TESAS. If you are not on TESAS, you will be a SELF-SPONSORED student.
